Spain's high-speed rail disaster: 68 dead after control centre let a train run into a stopped one
At least 68 killed in Spanish high-speed train crash
At least 68 people died when a Renfe AVE train struck a stationary Iryo train on the Madrid-Seville line near Urda. Transport Minister Óscar Puente says a computer failure halted six trains, then the control centre, for reasons he called "inexplicable", cleared one to proceed without speed restrictions. More than 500 rescue personnel worked into the night; Madrid residents queued over 100 deep to give blood. It is the second fatal crash on this line in nine months.
It isn't possible that our train was stopped for five or 10 minutes and that the other train wasn't told to stop. How can this happen with the technology we have?
