Brazil Is Cutting Down Amazon Rainforest to Build a Highway for the COP30 Climate Summit
Amazon rainforest cut down to build highway for COP climate summit (2025)
A new four-lane highway, Avenida Liberdade, is being carved through more than 13km of protected Amazon rainforest to ease traffic for the COP30 summit in Belém this November. Pará's state government calls it a "sustainable highway" with wildlife crossings and solar lighting, but residents who lost their açaí harvest and scientists warning of a fragmented ecosystem say the deforestation contradicts the summit's purpose.
From the moment of deforestation, there is a loss. We are going to lose an area to release these animals back into the wild, the natural environment of these species.

Yes there were many contradictions in the COP summit, but this is exactly what it's for so the world can understand the actual challenges other countries go through which takes the backseat when these meetings are held in rich countries.

Title reads as if they just cut down the entire thing lol. (The original title too).
