A $25 PineTime smartwatch now runs Python, thanks to a revived open-source OS

Michiel Beijen bought a $25 PineTime in 2023 and found its MicroPython-based OS, wasp-os, dormant and stuck on a 2019 fork. He revived it: builds work again, Bluetooth flashing drops from eight minutes to three and a half, free RAM jumps from 7.1 KB to 12.4 KB, and a watchdog stops hangs. Three upstream MicroPython pull requests were merged, so wasp-os now runs on mainline MicroPython. He added a Dutch week clock, an 8-bit pixel clock, and an optional Guido van Rossum app.

Think of it as a programmable Casio with a color display, Bluetooth, a step counter and a heart rate monitor.

Are there any "hackable" smart watches with (e)SIM available? I would love to have such a toy as standalone device with internet access. All I've seen so far have only BLE.

What’s a watch to do things like this that might not have this many hoops to jump through?

    Nice job mainlining the micropython:)

I do like the pinetime, but it really is just a little too limited IMHO. Just a little more RAM would make it so much easier to work with. High hopes for the pro model.
