SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef

Okaloosa County, Florida, plans to scuttle the 302-meter SS United States in the Gulf of Mexico in November, roughly 25 miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach. The 1952 Blue Riband record holder has been stripped of fuel, PCBs, funnels, and propellers, with artifacts headed to a museum. Controlled flooding should settle her upright in about 55 meters of water, surpassing the USS Oriskany as the largest vessel deliberately sunk as a reef.
At 302m long, she will surpass the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, sunk off Pensacola in 2006, as the largest vessel deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef.

It's a sad day. I crossed the Atlantic in it long ago. Some great memories.

If this is interesting to you, there's still one ocean liner left: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Mary_2
Buy a ticket while you can.

Only love from all the Philadelphians who have sat eating Swedish meatballs and looking at it in wonder. Will be dearly missed
