A 1,200-year-old Viking tapestry shows a procession heading toward a tree hung with corpses

Oseberg Tapestry Fragments

Found in 1904 inside the remarkably well-preserved Oseberg ship burial in Norway, this fragmentary tapestry dates to around 834 AD and is made of wool, silk, and flax. Its largest surviving panels show armed figures and animals moving left toward a great tree with hanging bodies, alongside covered horse-drawn carts, ritual costumes, and two black birds over a horse. Scholars still debate what it depicts, and extraction from its decayed state continues today.

The precession is headed towards a great tree with corpses hanging from it; it is unknown what this represents.
