Categorica open-sources a Prometheus exporter that runs inside NGINX itself

Native Prometheus Integration with Nginx

Categorica has open-sourced nginx-stats-prometheus, an MIT-licensed NGINX module that exposes Prometheus metrics directly from the server, so no sidecar exporter or separate web server is needed. It reports request counts, response classes, byte totals, connection states, and latency histograms, plus per-server and per-upstream stats. The trade-offs: fewer metrics than nginx-prometheus-exporter, a rebuild whenever NGINX is upgraded, and a 1 MB shared-memory cap that silently drops stats once full.

Metrics collection itself evades metrics collection, à la "who watches the watchmen".
