FingerWorks iGesture Pad turns finger gestures into mouse clicks and copy-paste commands

FingerWorks iGesture Pad (2005)

The FingerWorks iGesture Pad uses hidden sensors and a microprocessor to translate finger movements into pointer motion and shortcuts. Two fingers act like a mouse, three fingers trigger a left click, and pinching your thumb and middle finger copies while sliding them apart pastes. It also works as a number pad. PCMag gave it an average 3.0 rating.

For example, by pinching your thumb and middle finger together on the pad, you invoke the standard Copy command. To paste, slide your thumb and middle finger apart.

I always wondered how much of apple’s touch input/GestureRecognizer and related ideas came out of this acquisition. CoreAnimation and input have kept me on iOS. I hope the computer history museum can get an oral history from the people who worked on these one day.

Was multitouch the signature feature here? We had trackpads on laptops by the mid-90s

(PC Mag gave this device 3 stars out of 5 in 2005. Later that year, Apple quietly acquired FingerWorks and the technology driving the iGesture Pad became Multitouch on the iPhone)
