Gentoo maintainer begs Python devs to stop using uv-build
A plea not to use uv-build
A Gentoo developer pleads with Python package maintainers to drop uv-build as a build backend. The Rust-based tool's 1.5 MiB wheels force Gentoo users to compile it from source, and with 12 releases in 30 days, that's hours of rebuilding. Portability is worse: Rust doesn't support many platforms, and uv can fail on 32-bit systems due to address-space limits. The claimed 100 ms speedup is irrelevant since only developers, CI, and source-distro users ever run the backend.
Like, for every 100 ms spent running uv-build to install one release of your package, Gentoo users will spend many hours building new uv-build versions over and over again.
