HackerRank's CEO says sorry for making you grind LeetCode
Sorry we made you grind LeetCode

Vivek Ravisankar, co-founder and CEO of HackerRank, publicly apologizes for helping normalize algorithmic interviews that led to months of LeetCode grinding. He argues AI has changed software work, so hiring must evolve. HackerRank is shifting from algorithm puzzles to real code repository tasks, from code correctness to AI fluency and judgment, and from IDEs to agentic development environments, packaged as Chakra, an agentic interviewer that probes candidates' reasoning and validation of AI-generated code.
HackerRank didn’t invent algorithmic interviews, but we helped normalize a version of technical hiring that turned into months of grinding questions with little connection to the actual job.

Who buys that weird framing? They are not sorry, they just know that candidates never liked doing that.
They just see the writing on the wall, establishing a new business model.
I find it awkward that they try to sell such an emotional angle.

2030: Sorry we made you sit through AI interviews.

Will they nerf the AI so it doesn’t help you too much? Is it going to keep making mistakes that you have to correct? I guess that would be a good skill to check.

Heh.
Code correctness → AI fluency and judgment
Couldn’t ask for a pithier critique of recent software development trends.

Not sure whether it's good marketing, but interesting insight into the industry.
