Next.js 16.4 recommends Cache Components as the best choice for all apps, enabling them by default in create-next-app. New features include ensureStatic for guaranteeing static routes, navigation and prefetch APIs for finer control over prefetching, and agent tooling like next upgrade --agent and agent feedback. The release also brings smaller disk cache, lazy server HMR, shared Turbopack runtime, smaller production bundles, and React 19.3.
