Vanillin provides a sweet solution for chronic wound healing

Vanillin, the vanilla flavoring, could heal chronic wounds

Researchers at Flinders University's Biomedical Nanoengineering Laboratory have found that vanillin—the main compound in vanilla and a cheap, widely used food additive—has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Its amphiphilic structure lets it interact with reactive oxygen species and cell membranes, making it a promising, scalable ingredient for wound-healing formulations and targeted drug delivery. The work follows the team's earlier peppermint-oil coating for infection control.

With coordinated engagement between academia, clinicians, and industry, vanillin has the potential to progress from an underutilised bioactive to a clinically deployable component of next-generation wound care and regenerative therapeutics.
