TerrainSR - Fast, realistic heightmap upscaling model

TerrainSR is a model that generates realistic higher-detail terrain height data from lower-detail data, trained on 100m to 10m pairs. It was created to enable a real-scale historical strategy game by upscaling a compact 100m map of Europe to 10m detail, avoiding artifacts from modern infrastructure. On an RTX 4070, it generates a 50x50km patch in just 0.74 seconds, making it suitable for realtime applications like gaming. The model is faster and more varied than traditional erosion simulators, and is available on Hugging Face under the Apache 2.0 license.

TerrainSR is faster and more varied than using a traditional erosion simulator for large terrains.

Really neat idea - would have loved to have this 15-20 years ago!

I'm curious how it does for non-Earth data. Mars terrain for example.

On my phone but very interested in this (hence leaving a comment so I can find it later). What’s the variation, can we generate different maps from the same low res seed?

I’m interested in this because “macro maps” can be hand built in a way that may want to preserve gameplay balance while individual games can still feel broadly unique.

can you talk to some about how you trained this? this is such a neat idea!!
