America's Largest Producer of Coal Is Operating Under an Expired Permit
ABC Coke, the nation's largest foundry coke producer, has been operating without a valid air permit since its 2023 renewal application stalled. The Southern Environmental Law Center sued Jefferson County health officials to force action, and a day later the county agreed to move forward. The plant has a history of benzene pollution in nearby Tarrant, a predominantly Black community.
It's unfortunate it took us filing a lawsuit for JCDH to do its job, but at least we're one step closer to ABC Coke having a renewed permit.
