In 1967, 14 cargo ships from 8 nations were stranded in the Great Bitter Lake during the Six-Day War. For eight years, crews formed the Great Bitter Lake Association, creating their own society with sports, stamps, and Sunday 'church' gatherings. They were finally freed in 1975.
The first decision was to 'abolish all nationalities' – everyone was to be treated equally, whether from the East or the West.
