Chinese Calligraphy Workshop: Writing as a Hands-On Research Practice
Experiencing writing at our recent Chinese calligraphy workshop
At a recent VIEWS workshop, visiting fellow Roland Buckingham Hsiao introduced traditional Chinese calligraphy styles. The session emphasized writing as practice—learning brush control through Seal Script before Cursive Script. Participants also experimented with the Lisu syllabary, exploring calligraphic possibilities for living minority scripts. The experience highlighted how bodily engagement deepens understanding of writing systems.
The copies are not some perfected extraction of the text but rather capture something of the experience of its first writing.
