Starting in 2020 with no soldering or reverse-engineering experience, the author set out to upgrade a 3rd-generation iPod Nano's NAND flash from its stock capacity to 16GB. After swapping the chip, the iPod showed a Red X. The fix required exploiting a BootROM stack overflow, patching the EFI NAND driver's device table, and even smuggling data out through diagnostic mode to debug the initialization failure. The result: a working 16GB iPod Nano 3G.
I didn't realize how big of a challenge this would be, mainly because I was learning everything from scratch. But now that it's done, I can confidently say that it was worth it.
