Stanford Medicine researchers discovered that the forebrain and hindbrain arise from two distinct progenitor cells that never overlap, overturning the long-held single-origin model. The finding, published in Nature Neuroscience, traces the split across 550 million years of evolution and enabled the lab to grow functional human hindbrain motor neurons for the first time, opening new avenues for studying ALS and spinal muscular atrophy.
