The Geologist Who Found Britain's Oldest Skeleton and Called It a Roman Prostitute

William Buckland, the Oxford geologist who named the first dinosaur, misidentified a 35,000-year-old skeleton as a Roman prostitute. He also tried to prove Noah's Flood using cave bones, but later abandoned the idea after Louis Agassiz showed him evidence of Ice Age glaciers.

Displaying the prejudices of a 19th-century gentleman, Buckland blithely assumed that the skeleton must be female because it had been stained red and was adorned with jewellery.
