More than 2,300 years ago, a young woman with breast cancer and a severe fall was buried in the Altai Mountains, her tomb soon flooded and frozen solid. When Russian archaeologists found her in 1993, her tattooed skin and preserved belongings revealed the world of the Scythians, the nomadic people who dominated the Eurasian steppe and connected distant cultures.

The spirits of the mountains hadn’t been calling to her to offer aid, she realized; they had summoned her to the place where she was meant to die.
