Google Maps beats US government to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

Following President Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America,' Google Maps has already updated the name for US users, outpacing the official USGS maps. The change, which took effect on Saturday, shows 'Lake America' in the US, keeps 'Lake Ontario' for Canadians, and displays both names elsewhere. This mirrors Google's earlier handling of the Gulf of Mexico rename, and raises concerns about the company's willingness to adopt politically motivated name changes.

Google’s rapid adoption of the new official US name for the body of water suggests that it will continue to rename geological features based on executive orders, which may only embolden the administration to rename more things.

The title of this article implies they changed it before being forced/asked. As stupid as the whole thing is, the executive order was signed. This article is just about how the government’s own maps aren’t updated yet.

This wasn’t a case of Google updating based on a mere suggestion or guessing at what our mad king wants. It’s still silly, it’s still petty, but this article reads (and is titled) like clickbait to me. Instead we should focus on the absurdity of the EO.

There's clearly a line running through the lake. It should only change name on the lower part.
