Verisign to Kill .name Third-Level Domains
Discontinuation of third level domain registrations for the .name TLD [pdf]
Verisign has filed a request with ICANN to discontinue third-level domain registrations under the .name TLD, citing declining usage and limited registrar support. If approved, no new names like string.string.name will be registered, and existing ones will be deleted after a 90-day notice period. The move aims to increase operational efficiency for the .name TLD.
Currently, third level domain names may be registered in the .name TLD. This RSEP seeks to discontinue third level domain name registrations due to declining usage and limited registrar support of the service.
