EU AI Act Enforcement Begins: First RFIs Sent to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google
The EU has begun enforcing the AI Act: first RFIs to model providers
On August 29, 2026, the European Commission's AI Office sent formal requests for information (RFIs) to leading frontier labs, reportedly including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, under the EU AI Act. The RFIs ask about model security, independent external evaluations, and monitoring, as well as training-content summaries. This marks the first enforcement step since the general-purpose AI obligations became enforceable on August 2. Non-compliance can lead to fines up to €15 million or 3% of global turnover. The move follows a summer of AI safety incidents and contrasts with the US's voluntary approach.
As a first step in enforcing the AI Act, our AI Office has formally sent requests for information to a number of providers of general-purpose AI models based in different regions of the world.
