Electric Rain Can Eat Through Metal

New research published in Nature reveals that water droplets become electrically charged as they slide across smooth surfaces, generating an electric field strong enough to corrode metals, even those with protective coatings. This phenomenon may explain why rain damages coated metals and why water moves slowly on smooth surfaces. The study, led by Hans-Jürgen Butt at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, could inform better corrosion control, a trillion-dollar problem.
