Crafting QR Codes: A deep dive into QR code art (2024)

The Art and Science of Crafting Beautiful, Scannable QR Codes

QR codes are everywhere, but most are ugly and hard to scan. This deep dive explores how to create artistic QR codes that still work, covering techniques like dot overlays, padding manipulation, and error correction tricks. It introduces qrframe, a tool for designing custom QR codes, and shares practical tips on contrast and solid colors to ensure scannability.

Nobody willingly goes out of their way to scan a QR code. Yet they have infested the world, because it’s the simplest way to visually share a URL.

That is a nice write up on all the techniques to create unique looking and still scanable QR codes. We use these approaches at QRocodile (https://qrocodile.io) to create reusable design patterns that can be combined and mixed to create well designed QR codes. We try to make it user friendly with some guards (due to scanability) so that also non techies can "design" unique codes. Currently working on API and MCP to make these design settings easily "promptable".
