MariaDB: Promote getting to 10k GitHub stars in server log and client prompt

MariaDB asks users to star its GitHub repo in server logs and client prompt

A pull request for MariaDB Server, MDEV-38328, proposes adding a line to the client prompt and server logs encouraging users to star the project on GitHub, aiming for 10k stars. The change, initially rejected, was reopened after internal discussions and rebased. The proposal sparked debate, with some seeing it as a positive community appeal and others criticizing it as unprofessional for a database. The PR was ultimately merged.

I expect GitHub star chasing from My First Node.js package, not a professional RDBMS.

It will be interesting to see the uptick in stars if any.

The real gold in this thread however is the link to https://github.com/zloirock/core-js/blob/master/docs/2023-02...

Seriously, it's a wild (and heart-breaking) story about js-core maintainer adding a similar line for funding, receiving many hateful answers, while in debt and even going to prison, then not being able to leaveRussia, just for the sake of continuing to maitain his FOSS lib.

I've posted it as a separate entry because it definitely needs more visibility.

I'm okay with this. Seems like they are going about it responsibly enough. Really don't understand the vitriol behind the response near the end either.

I would prefer it if there were more things like this. Or a randomly chosen line from a set for example.

I would argue that it shouldn't say "10k stars" tweak the verbiate to simply state: "Support MariaDB with a simple gesture by starring the project on GitHub at https://github.com/MariaDB/Server"

Edit: They finalized on something more generic it seems.
