The GNU Hurd project has released its latest quarterly update, introducing experimental support for 9pfs and a work-in-progress port of OpenNTPD. A major kernel improvement now allows for dynamic /dev/ entries, eliminating the need for static translators for SATA devices. With ongoing enhancements to dhcpcd for better IPv6 support and new ports like Neovim, the operating system continues its steady, independent development path.
Reading about a bunch of people developing their own thing without any regard for or interest in the mainstream always feels a little bit like a cold glass of tonic – the best soft drink – in the depths of hell.

Very nice. This brings GNU/HURD features to about the year 1995 which is impressive for its brief 35 year existence.

I’m less excited about Hurd than I once was, because now there’s interesting alternatives with good momentum (Redox and Genode in particular). But I’m glad it’s still moving along; it seems to be the only steadily maturing C project with this kind of approach.
It may be silly to write a more secure OS in C, but I think it’s important to preserve the C lineage over time, even if it’s not at the forefront.
