I argue that we should treat the current subsidized era of AI from frontier labs like a whale fall, a temporary but massive resource. While these labs may eventually face financial collapse, we must use their powerful tools now to tackle open source technical debt. By automating mechanical tasks like version bumps and test fixes, we can build better infrastructure for the future before the free tokens disappear.
