Virginia Bans Sale of Geolocation Data: Privacy Law Update
Virginia bans sale of precise geolocation data

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed S.B. 388 into law, amending the VCDPA to prohibit selling geolocation data. This ban, effective July 1, 2026, follows similar actions by Maryland and Oregon. The legislation responds to growing regulatory scrutiny, including recent investigations by the California Attorney General and an FTC settlement targeting data brokers.
