Mexico's Profepa Shuts Down Illegal Coastal Developments, Vows Demolition
Mexico Crackdown on Coastal Development Underway

Mexico's environmental protection agency, Profepa, has launched a crackdown on unauthorized coastal developments, closing four projects in Puerto Vallarta and threatening demolition for others. The agency's head, Marina Boy Tamborrel, stated that fines alone have failed to deter developers, who treat them as a cost of doing business. Profepa now prioritizes environmental restoration over penalties, with a focus on the Yucatán coast, where 23,000 hectares were recently devastated. Officials are urging citizens to report violations.
All works that aren’t authorized will have to be demolished.
