England is set to become one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C, with figures showing the target of treating 80% of known cases has been met. Deaths from the virus have fallen by 36% in the last decade, nearing the 2030 goal. Antiviral tablets cure over 95% of cases, and initiatives like A&E blood tests and free home-testing kits have helped find undiagnosed individuals. Since 2015, over 100,000 people have been treated. The Hepatitis C Trust calls this a 'significant public health achievement.'
England is now leading the world in the mission to eliminate this disease and on course to beat the WHO's 2030 target, but we are determined to keep up the momentum and finish the job.
