The UK's War on Anonymity Has Come to America
An Effort investigation reveals a coordinated campaign by five foreign NGOs and their US affiliates to push digital ID laws in America under the guise of child safety. These groups, including 5Rights and the Center for Countering Digital Hate, have lobbied in 21 states and Congress, drawing on UK laws that have been used to surveil and jail dissidents. The report exposes financial ties, undisclosed lobbying, and the importation of censorship tactics.
In theory, there may be age verification laws which do not contribute to authoritarian control of speech. However, when foreign principals are lobbying for age verification law, during a time when those laws are being used to suppress political speech in their home countries, it cannot be a surprise if those laws are used for the same purposes in America.
