Nashville votes to seize land for data center near zoo

Nashville's Metro Council voted 27-5 to authorize eminent domain proceedings to acquire the property next to the Nashville Zoo, where developer DC Blox plans to build a data center. The move, initiated by Mayor Freddie O'Connell, faces a long road: pending zoning appeals, a potential legal fight, and cost concerns. Councilmembers debated the necessity, with some calling it a 'gross misuse' of condemnation power. The property recently sold for $23 million but was assessed at $37 million.

Councilmember Courtney Johnston called the move to initiate eminent domain proceedings 'dangerous' and said she is concerned about the cost to the city and the legal fight that could ensue.
