Designing a 4D Digital Archive to Preserve the Art of Ikebana

We created a 4D digital viewing system to capture the full embodied process of Ikebana. Using twenty-two synchronized cameras and an eye tracker, we record body motion, evolving flower arrangements, and gaze behavior. Our frame-wise reconstruction with 3D Gaussian Splatting allows interactive viewing from any angle without temporal drift. This archive turns tacit techniques into observable data, supporting cultural preservation and new methods for skill transmission in collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Yokokubo.

By making previously tacit techniques subject to systematic observation, the method supports both the cultural preservation of Ikebana and the development of new forms of skill transmission.
