The UK government has nationalized British Steel to safeguard 2,700 jobs and preserve the country's last ability to produce virgin steel. While the move costs over a million pounds daily, officials argue it prevents total reliance on global imports. The state now controls the Scunthorpe plant, formerly owned by Jingye Group, to keep aging blast furnaces running until green alternatives are ready.
