Kodak's Lunar Orbiter camera was a spy satellite leftover
Kodak's "Pre-Invented" Lunar Orbiter Camera; Or, the Fate of SAMOS Readout

NASA's Lunar Orbiter spacecraft used a camera system Kodak originally built for the Air Force's classified SAMOS spy satellite program. The system, which developed film in orbit and transmitted images to Earth, was 'pre-invented' when Kodak joined Boeing's 1963 bid. After SAMOS was canceled, NASA adopted the hardware for lunar mapping, enabling the first comprehensive photos of the Moon.
Bimat was started as soon as we started work on E-1 and E-2, because we knew we had to process film in orbit.
