M7.7 Earthquake Strikes Indonesia's Flores Sea, 1.5 Million Exposed to Strong Shaking

Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake – 68 km NNW of Ende, Indonesia

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, on August 14, 2026. The USGS warns of possible casualties and damage, with approximately 1.5 million people exposed to strong to severe shaking. The quake resulted from reverse faulting at shallow depth, part of the ongoing convergence between the Australia and Sunda plates. Aftershocks are likely, and residents are encouraged to report their experience.

The 1992 earthquake and resulting tsunami destroyed tens of thousands of homes and resulted in at least 2500 fatalities.

Is this big enough to produce a Tsunami? Apparently maybe only a small localised one, but I'm supposed to be getting the ferry from Lombok to Bali shortly and two of those have already burnt down the last 2 weeks!

I know large earthquakes are effectively random (ignoring aftershocks) but this feels like a lot this year, yeah?

This morning, when I woke up, I checked the phone notifications. I saw some alerts from the LastQuake app that a major earthquake occurred on Flores. I didn't feel it here in Bukit, Bali, where I currently reside.

So Google Earth says the ocean depth at the epicenter is 6,286 ft / 1,916 m, but I couldn't find a corresponding tsunami alert or evaluation of risk.
