FBI probes fake Wi-Fi hotspot on Delta flight, likely set up by DEF CON attendees
DEF CON crowd suspected in fake-hotspot attack on Delta flight

Passengers on Delta Flight 591 from Las Vegas to Atlanta allegedly created a fake Wi-Fi hotspot with a phishing page to harvest credentials, disrupting the plane's internet for 30 minutes. The incident, which occurred after DEF CON, prompted an FBI investigation, though no arrests were made. Delta confirmed the unauthorized network and stated flight safety was never compromised.
One initial finding is an unauthorized WiFi network, which was not provided, operated, or supplied by Delta, was present onboard the aircraft for a short time during the flight.

>a fake hotspot (“Delta WiFi Fast”), with a phishing landing page “designed to harvest passengers’ personal credentials.”
It wasn't a fake hotspot. It was a real hotspot with a SSID that potentially infringed Delta's trademark. CFAA doesn't prevent harvesting people's credentials since it's the user's own machine that people are connecting to.
