Gravitational Lensing of Supernovae: A New Window on the Cosmos
Strong Gravitational Lensing and Microlensing of Supernovae
Strong gravitational lensing and microlensing of supernovae (SNe) are emerging as powerful probes of cosmology and astrophysics. This review covers the first discoveries of strongly lensed SNe, the use of time delays between multiple images to measure cosmological distances and constrain the Hubble constant, and the potential of the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) to provide competitive constraints. Lensed SNe also enable studies of SN progenitors, high-redshift spectra, SN sizes via microlensing, and dust properties in galaxies. Despite the rarity of such events, upcoming surveys promise a boom in discoveries.
We anticipate the upcoming years to be exciting with a boom in lensed SN discoveries.
