New research from CU Boulder reveals that wind and turbulence systematically transform odor signals as they travel, creating patterns that animals may use to locate the source. The study, published in PRX Life, categorizes odor signals by frequency and identifies three ways turbulence alters them: filtering, spreading, and generating new frequencies. This work, part of the Odor2Action network, bridges physics and neuroscience and could inform artificial odor-source localization.
By understanding how air and wind transform odor signals, we can better understand animal navigation behavior and eventually mimic it, in applications from search and rescue to locating hazardous chemical leaks.
