Dr. Drang combines TerminalWidget and Astropy to create a desktop widget that shows the azimuth, altitude, and constellation of the Sun, Moon, and planets up to Saturn. The script runs every 30 minutes via launchd, and the article explains the code and setup, including a function to convert azimuth to compass directions. The widget even hinted at a solar eclipse, though clouds obscured the view.
Since 100% of the Sun is being blocked by clouds, I won’t be able to see any of the eclipse. But my planets widget is showing me, more or less, that it’s happening above the clouds.
