Panasonic overturns Red's Raw video patent that stumped Apple, Sony, and Nikon

Japan's patent court has invalidated a key Red patent on compressed Raw video, following a challenge by Panasonic. The patent, filed in 2008, was at the center of legal battles with Apple, Sony, and Nikon, which Nikon resolved by acquiring Red. The decision could eliminate license fees for formats like ProRes Raw, but its impact is unclear as many companies now offer Raw video.

The court determined that many of the claims made in the patent, first filed in the US in 2008, would have been obvious to someone skilled in the subject area and familiar with existing developments.
