New Orleans to Replace Human 911 Operators with AI

New Orleans will use AI to answer 911 calls instead of a human

New Orleans is testing AI to answer 911 calls, aiming to reduce dispatcher workload by triaging calls and providing automated responses for incidents with high call volumes. The AI, developed by Carbyne, will not handle emergencies but will route callers to human dispatchers when needed. Concerns include potential biases and difficulties understanding diverse accents.

The OPCD said the AI will not be used to handle emergency calls, only to direct such calls to a human dispatcher.
