In 1933, Aksel Sandemose published a novel that codified the unwritten social rules of his Danish hometown, renaming it Jante. The 'Law of Jante'—a list of ten prohibitions against individualism and self-promotion—became a cultural touchstone across Scandinavia. Despite denials, its influence persists, as seen in the deliberately mundane shop names in Nykøbing Mors, where the hairdresser is simply called 'Hair' and the pub 'The Pub.'
