Tell Abu Hureyra: The First Farmers
Tell Abu Hureyra (prehistoric archaeological site)
Tell Abu Hureyra in Syria, now submerged under Lake Assad, reveals a nearly continuous occupation from 13,300 to 7,800 years ago, spanning the transition from hunter-gatherers to the world's first farmers. Excavated in 1972–73, the site yielded evidence of early rye cultivation during the Younger Dryas, making it crucial for understanding the origins of agriculture.
It is now believed that the first systematic cultivation of cereal crops was around 13,000 years ago.
