Linux Desktop Market Share Surpasses 10% in North America
According to Statcounter, Linux has reached 10.65% of desktop web usage in North America for July 2026, nearly doubling from 5.52% in June. The sharp increase is partly attributed to a reduction in the 'Unknown' category, suggesting better traffic identification rather than a mass exodus from Windows or macOS. Cloudflare Radar also shows a substantial Linux presence, though both datasets measure web activity, not installed systems. The milestone reflects years of ecosystem improvements, including hardware compatibility, gaming via Proton, and growing user frustration with Windows.
Linux has spent decades described as perpetually close to a desktop breakthrough. So, maybe, just maybe, we’re really approaching a famous running joke and long-standing prediction: “Year of Linux on the Desktop.”
