Trembling Photons in Non-Abelian Electric Fields

Researchers have synthesized a non-Abelian electric field in a photonic platform, bringing high-energy physics phenomena to the tabletop. By using a fiber ring resonator with polarization and time modulation, they observed Zitterbewegung—the trembling motion of a wave packet—and its interference with Bloch oscillations when an Abelian field is added. This work opens avenues for programmable photonic circuits and simulations of topological quantum computing.
