Our study reveals that inherited genetic makeup directly influences how DNA damage from smoking or UV rays leads to cancer. By controlling environmental factors in mice, we proved that genetic background dictates tumor evolution and mutation pathways. These findings suggest future cancer prevention and treatment strategies must account for individual genetics and population diversity to be truly effective.
Cancer does not arise entirely by chance. Although tumours often reach the same biological endpoint, the path to that endpoint is determined by an individual's genetic background.
