NSF Launches 4-Year PhD Pilot with Industry Research Placements

The National Science Foundation is investing $47 million to launch a pilot program for four-year Ph.D. degrees that integrate industry research placements. This initiative, led by the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership, aims to align doctoral training with the reality that most STEM graduates now pursue careers outside academia. By partnering with universities and private companies, the program prepares students for diverse professional paths while maintaining academic rigor and accelerating degree completion.

The majority of STEM Ph.D. recipients today build careers beyond the university, yet American industry has had few opportunities to invest directly into how our doctoral researchers are trained.
