History Remembers Two Robert McNamaras: War Architect and Poverty Crusader
Robert McNamara is remembered as both the architect of Vietnam escalation and a dedicated leader at the World Bank fighting global poverty. His career reveals a consistent faith in quantification and technocracy to solve complex social problems. Despite massive spending and data-driven strategies, his efforts in both wars ended in disillusionment, leaving a legacy defined by the limitations of treating human conflicts as purely mathematical exercises.
To this day, I see quantification as a language to add precision to reasoning about the world. Of course, it cannot deal with issues of morality, beauty, and love, but it is a powerful tool too often neglected when we seek to overcome poverty, fiscal deficits, or the failure of our national health programs.
