How to Write English Prose: Balancing Beauty and the Sublime
I explore the magnificent range of English prose by contrasting Sir Thomas Browne's ornate Baroque style with the majestic restraint of the King James Bible. Rather than viewing these as opposites, I argue they represent a continuum between the beautiful and the sublime. True prose mastery emerges only after centuries of linguistic refinement, allowing writers to balance expressiveness with reticence using the language's vast vocabulary and subtle syntax.
Prose, however, evolves only when that force has been subdued by centuries upon centuries of refinement, after unconscious enchantment has been largely mastered by conscious artistry.
